Are Large Sapphires Becoming Rare?

1. How large are most sapphires?

Most sapphires used in jewelry are relatively small.

On the commercial gemstone market, the majority of sapphires weigh between 1 and 3 carats. Stones over 5 carats are already rarer, particularly if they have good colour and clarity.

Once a sapphire reaches 10 carats or more, it becomes a collector’s item. These stones are no longer typical gemstones for jewelry, but rather statement gems.

For this reason, sapphires over 10–15 carats are rarely found in everyday jewelry collections.

2. What happens above 10 carats?

As carat weight increases, the rarity of sapphires rises dramatically.

The reason is simple: nature rarely produces crystals that are both large and pure enough to be cut into high-quality gemstones.

Most sapphire crystals contain inclusions, cracks or colour zones that limit the size of the finished gemstone.

As a result, cutters often remove significant portions of the rough material to achieve a balanced shape and good lustre. A large rough crystal can therefore yield a much smaller finished stone.

For this reason, sapphires over 10 carats are already considered exceptional on the gemstone market.

3. Why large sapphires are becoming increasingly rare

Several factors contribute to the current rarity of large sapphires.

Firstly, many historic gemstone deposits – such as Kashmir, Burma, Sri Lanka and Thailand – have been mined and traded for centuries. Thailand, in particular, has played a central role in the global sapphire and ruby trade, not only as a source but also as one of the world’s most important centres for cutting and treatment. Although sapphires are still mined in these regions, large, high-quality crystals are far rarer than they used to be.

Secondly, modern cutting standards are higher. Today, cutters strive to maximise brilliance and symmetry rather than simply preserving the weight. This often reduces the final size of the finished gemstone.

Finally, geological reality also plays a role. Although large sapphire crystals do occur, they are often heavily included or opaque rather than transparent.

4. Transparent vs. opaque sapphires

When it comes to the size of sapphires, it is important to distinguish between transparent and opaque stones.

Large transparent sapphires suitable for fine jewellery are extremely rare. The combination of size, colour and clarity becomes increasingly difficult to find as the carat weight increases.

Opaque sapphires, on the other hand, can occur in larger sizes, as inclusions and internal structures make the stone less transparent. These stones can nevertheless be fascinating, particularly if they display unique colour zones, silky textures or unusual optical effects.

5. A truly striking piece

Occasionally, sapphires appear that stand out not for their perfect transparency, but for their size and unique internal structure.

In our collection, for example, we offer a 34-carat multicoloured sapphire that displays beautiful shades of blue, green and grey with a silky internal structure. Stones of this size are rarely found in faceted form, making them impressive collector’s items.

Whilst very large transparent sapphires represent a kind of rarity, unusually large opaque stones can be just as fascinating, as they reveal the complex inner world of the crystal.

6. Why size still matters

With gemstones, rarity is never determined by a single factor.

Colour, clarity, origin and treatment all influence value – yet size remains one of the most important factors.

The larger sapphires become, the more drastically the number of crystals from which fine gemstones can be obtained decreases. That is why exceptional stones weighing over 10, 20 or even 30 carats attract particular attention from collectors and gemstone enthusiasts.

Large sapphires remind us that gemstones are not merely pieces of jewelry. They are also geological stories that have unfolded over millions of years.

7. The fascination of large gemstones

Whether transparent or opaque – large sapphires possess a special aura.

Their size allows us to discern colour zones, silk structures and crystal growth patterns that remain invisible in smaller stones.

For gemologists and collectors, large sapphires are therefore more than just decorative objects. They become windows into the geological processes that formed them deep within the Earth.

And occasionally, they remind us that nature still holds surprises in store – even in a gemstone that has been traded for centuries.
